Musical Fidelity's new M3CD player proves not only that good things come in compact packages, but that they also come with slimmed down price tags. The M3CD is a high performance 16-bit, 44 kHz CD player that sells for a bit under half the price of Musical Fidelity's incredibly well received M6CD. It's a smidge smaller than the M6CD, too. But this thing is a performance giant.

"Because we believe that the first step to proper musicality is excellent technical performance, we have ensured that the M3CD has low distortion, virtually flat frequency response, low noise and low jitter," reports Musical Fidelity founder Antony Michaelson. "Once we sorted out those, we went on to refine subtle matters of engineering that give proper musicality."

The signal path respects native red-book CD playback, and it also uses 24-bit dual-differential DACs. Unlike every other DAC in the Musical Fidelity line, the M3CD does NOT feature the 24/192 upsampling before the DAC.

Musical Fidelity has made a real breakthrough in analog filter design, meaning they’ve done careful research that led them to forgo the use of traditional digital-domain filter chipsets and instead use an analog filter in the output stage. This can be accomplished because the 24-bit DAC oversamples the CD datastream eight times to 352 kHz, a frequency that is sufficiently high to allow carefully-implemented analog filtering of out-of-band noise.

Using this new analog filter produces results not much different in the measured performance from their upsampling players and DACs, and that is an accomplishment!

It’s All About Musical Quality, Not Extras
With the M3, Musical Fidelity concentrates on the quality of the output signal rather than loading of the player with extras you might not need. It's sleek and simple, offering a pair of line level outputs, plus one coaxial digital output and one optical digital output.

Unlike its bigger brother, the M3CD lacks XLR balanced outputs, opting for single-ended outs only. And it doesn't include the digital inputs that you'll find on the M6CD. If you can live without these additional connections – and most of us can without any difficulty at all – you'll find that the M3CD delivers everything you're looking for (and listening for) in the performance department.

Choke-Regulated Power Supply
The M3CD incorporates a choke-regulated power supply derived from the massive Titan power amp and used throughout the M6 and M3 product lines. As far as we know, the use of a choke filter is unique in a CD player. It filters out unwanted noise from the mains and allows the M3CD's five independent power supply units to work properly, regardless of AC power line irregularities. It makes a huge difference in the sound quality.

Top Quality Slot-Loading Mechanism
The M3CD combines a smooth-as-silk top quality slot-loading CD mechanism with unsurpassed playability and a top quality up-sampling 24-bit digital-to-analog converter. This moves the digital artifacts to well outside the audio band, allowing easy removal without detriment to the top end of the audio band. The well-tuned filtering circuit creates immeasurably small jitter, noise, and distortion artifacts, allowing astounding imaging, detail, and transparency. It will deliver all musical types exactly as the artist originally intended.

Dual Differential Design DAC
The advanced DAC is a dual differential design with eight-times oversampling. Total correlated jitter is extremely low at less than 135 picoseconds, peak-to-peak. Linearity is an impressive <0.1 dB down to -96 dB. So this is an extremely musical player that will give you more than a taste of analog-like realism packed with detail and big dynamic range.

The M3CD is designed to be partnered with present and future M3 and M6 series products. This combination yields one of the best high-fidelity systems available at any price. And lucky for you, the price offers a superb performance-to-cost ratio in the best Musical Fidelity tradition.

The included wireless universal remote control offers the convenience of armchair command of your M3CD. It will also operate other components in the Musical Fidelity M3 product line. A high quality removable IEC-style power cord is included, too.
